Welcome Committee was created to reach out to each new members who posts in #introductions. The intent of this committee is to welcome new members of the Out In Tech Slack, make them feel welcomed, have a few members to get to know to (and also spur more connections from other folks), and eventually direct them to other channels that they may potentially be interested in.

Joining The Team

Members of the Welcome Committee should be well-versed enough with the Slack space to be able to make 10-16 channel recommendations to new Slack members based off of the new member’s interests and their own personal interests. @the-welcome-committee is a user group made up of individuals who volunteered to welcome new folks in.

How We Do It

Members of the Welcome Committee are added to the user group @the-welcome-committee and the private channel 🔒welcome-committee. In the channel every week committee members sign up for a day of the week when they will be responsible for greeting every new member that introduces themselves in the #introductions channel (the ultimate goal being that no single member should have to do more than one day a week).

A basic template for the welcome greeting (in thread) is:

💡 Hi @{tag their name}! Glad to have you!

{I like to include some personal note here, something that stood out to me from their intro. Maybe something we have in common, or if they're from a place that i've been or want to go, or if they're also a developer sometimes i say "me too!" Or just anything that sticks out that I can engage with and personalize.}

Thought you might enjoy some of these channels: {I recommend various channels they might be into based on their intros - you can search in the search bar for various topics and keywords they mention - we have so many channels!}

Lots of content and places to jump in here! I love {list some of your favorite channels here}. You can see all the options by going to the sidebar and selecting the [browse channel] button, or look on https://outintech.com/slack.

If you have any ideas for a channel, you can propose it in #channel_suggestions! We also vote on new channels there, so ya might want to join to see what's coming down the line. Lastly, you might want to check out #global-donut-q4-2023 to get automatically paired with other folks from across the world every other week, if you'd be interested in some coffee chats!

You should have already received a welcome message from Slackbot in your DMs. If you haven't or if you have any questions/concerns, please feel free to use the Talk to the Welcome Committee workflow at the top of #introductions or [here]

Feel free to spruce it up to make it sound like your own voice, but we still recommend that whatever you come up with, you save somewhere to copy/paste so that you don’t have to be typing it up every single time. The parts that you’ll be personalizing for each introduction would the name of the person and the channel suggestions.

Future Goal:

Develop NPL to translate a user's post into channel suggestions.
